Buying is faster, but less custom
Buying is usually faster. A ready HRM system often includes employee records, attendance, leave, approvals, documents, and reporting patterns that many businesses already need. The tradeoff is that the company may need to adapt some internal habits to the product’s structure.
Building gives control, but adds ownership
- Building gives more control. A custom system can match unusual policies, internal language, and existing tools.
- SMEs should calculate total cost, not just the first development cost or subscription fee. Internal systems can become expensive when key developers leave, integrations break, or users need support.
- A practical approach is to map the workflows first: employee records, attendance, leave, approvals, payroll preparation, onboarding, reporting, and permissions.
Map workflows before deciding
The best decision is the one the organization can sustain.
